Easter Egg Rolling

Easter Egg Rolling - a traditional Easter activity. In America the president invites children to roll their eggs on the White House lawn. The have to use wooden spoons to help their eggs along as they are rolling on the flat.

In England we roll our eggs down hill. These children decorate hard boiled eggs to roll down the hill.

But what if we wanted to roll chocolate Easter Eggs down a hill. What sort of egg would go the furthest? Think like a Scientist and investigate what sort of chocolate Easter Eggs roll the furthest. We will investigate in class over the next few days. We will take photos and videos and in groups we will make some google presentations.

Watch this space - we will post our presentations and our results as soon as we have found out which sort of Easter Egg rolls the furthest!

Week 9 News

Term 1 Week 9
Monday 26th March
Dear Parents,

Goodness this term is just flying past! Week 9 already!
Homework Homework projects were brilliant, beautiful and beneficial! We learnt about blue whales, brontosauruses, boomerangs, baboons, bees, books, butterflies, the blue macaw, brown bears, base guitars and The Beattie Family at the beach! Once again homework was presented on the homework wiki (using words, pictures, word documents and vokis) as posters and booklets.
I have made a short slideshow of our ‘A’ homework which is now on the blog and I am working on the ‘B’ slideshow. I hope you enjoy looking at it.
This week the letter is ‘C’. Again children can take any subject starting with the letter ‘C’ and find out some facts about it. It could be a place, country, animal, instrument or a person even! We love to learn new facts on any subject. Children can then present their new learning in any format they choose.
Grant Hastings – Grant will be back in school again on Friday this week. So far we have learnt elephant rolls and throws, stop sign throws and crocodile hands to catch our balls. We have enjoyed working with a buddy each time.
Library – Our library day is Monday
Mathletics Passwords are in homework books and four pieces of homework are set each week. Homework has to be completed before children can work on other areas of Mathletics.
Chocolate Fundraising – All money for the chocolate sales needs to be at the office by Friday 30th March at the latest please. If you still have chocolates at home feel free to send them back to school.
Lucky Book Club – Orders need to be in to the class by Friday 30th March. Cheques to be made payable to Havelock North Primary.

'A' Homework

For 'A' Homework we all had to choose a subject that interests us beginning with 'A'. We had to research 3 interesting facts and then we could choose how to present our project. Some of us made posters or booklets. Some of us put our homework on the wiki. We used words, pictures and voice. Have a look at our homework wiki to see William's awesome voki.

Week 8 News

Term 1 Week 8
Monday 19th March
Dear Parents,

Homework Wow – We had some fantastic homework projects this week. We learnt about Australia, The Big 5 in Africa, Astronauts, Auckland, Acorns, The Andrews Family, Alice in Wonderland, Albatros and an Antique Plane. Homework was presented on the blog (using words, pictures, word documents and vokis) as posters and booklets. All the children spoke beautifully about their topic and were given great feedback and feedforward from the rest of the class.
This week the letter is ‘B’. Again children can take any subject starting with the letter ‘B’ and find out some facts about it. It could be a place, country, animal, instrument or a person even! We love to learn new facts on any subject. Children can then present their new learning in any format they choose. They may want to try a different presentation form from that they chose last week. They can create a poster to go on the classroom wall. They can talk about their subject, maybe they can bring it in? They could also use the computer for the project. They can create in word, power point, publisher, maybe even find a youtube video, create a wordle or a voki – the sky’s the limit! If the project is electronic either email it to me, bring it in on a memory stick or put it straight onto the Room 4 Homework Wiki. The link to the wiki is on the blog and the password and username are exactly the same as the one for Mathletics. Remember to take a look at the ‘How to…’ pages on the wiki.
Grant Hastings – Last week we started softball with Grant on Friday. He will be back in school this week.
Library – Our library day is Monday
Mathletics Passwords are in homework books and four pieces of homework are set each week. Homework has to be completed before children can work on other areas of Mathletics.
Chocolate Fundraising – Chocolates will continue to be issued to children this week. Please let me know if you don’t want any more chocolates to sell. The children are very keen to keep bringing home more and more! If you have chocolates at home that you no longer wish to sell please send them back in to school with any money for chocolates already sold. There were 30 chocolates in each box.
Spelling City –Spelling City can be accessed through the class blog or by going to http://www.spellingcity.com/
Once there choose the tab ‘Find a List’ and type ‘Mrs Duligall’ onto the search box with ‘Teacher Name’ as the criteria. Click on my name in the search result below and you will get to the spelling lists.
Lucky Book Club – booklets come home today. Please send orders to the class by Friday 30th March. Cheques to be made payable to Havelock North Primary. Due to sales on the last issue we were given two new chapter books for the classroom, both about a kitten called Snowball.
Kahurangi NZ Maori Dance Theatre This group will be in school on Wednesday with an amazing show to share with the whole school. Their talent has been enjoyed throughout the world and we are most fortunate to have them at HNP.
Our History – This is our new topic, taking us to the end of this term and then into the first 5 weeks of next term. We are planning a visit to the CHB Museum in Waipawa and Oruawharo Homestead in Week 2 of next term, Tuesday 1st May. A letter with all the details regarding the trip will follow shortly.

Maths Thinking

In class we have been learning how to work out word problems in maths. We have discovered if we draw pictures, use counters and other materials, make tables, write sentences and use the computer it helps us to think about the problem more clearly.

We had a problem about frogs. There were ten frogs in a pond. Some of them were sitting on a rock. We had to work out how many of the frogs were hiding in the water.

Some of us wrote sentences on the computer. Some of us made a table and some drew pictures. Some of us used counters. We had to glue them onto the poster so they wouldn't fall off.

All of us worked with buddies. We worked together and talked about our thinking.

Congratulations Isabella on your Principal's Award.

Week 7 News

Term 1 Week 7
Monday 12th March
Dear Parents,

Blog – Thanks to all of you who have been checking out our class blog. At the time of writing this newsletter we have had over 700 views. One day last week we had over 50 views for just that one day! This week three other classes in school will be looking at our blog and learning how to make appropriate comments on other peoples work. We will be looking at three other class blogs over the following few weeks to learn about commenting ourselves. It’s exciting to see our audience grow for our work.
Discovery Learning – Sadly last week was our last Discovery Learning session for this term. Children have loved the experience, the choice of activities and the chance to work with their peers. We will return to Discovery Learning next term.
Homework This week I am introducing a new element into the weekly homework. Projects! We will run projects weekly until Discovery Learning returns. This week the letter is ‘A’. Children can take any subject starting with the letter ‘A’ and find out some facts about it. It could be a place, country, animal, instrument or a person even! We love to learn new facts on any subject. Children can then present their new learning in any format they choose. I am very exciting and looking forward to Friday when everyone will get to present their projects to the class.
Grant Hastings – We will welcome Grant back on Friday when he will be in school taking classes for softball skills.
Library – Our library day is a Monday
Mathletics Passwords are in homework books and homework will be set each week.
Spelling City – As well as the essential work lists I have now also put on number words. Children should know how to spell numbers for their number knowledge ladder. Spelling City can be accessed through the class blog or by going to http://www.spellingcity.com/
Once there choose the tab ‘Find a List’ and type ‘Mrs Duligall’ onto the search box with ‘Teacher Name’ as the criteria. Click on my name in the search result below and you will get to the spelling lists.

Discovery Learning

Room 4 love all the different activities during Discovery Learning.
We love making things, crafts, toast, popcorn, arty things. We love using our imagination as well as our Key Competencies of Managing Ourselves, Relating to Others and Participating and Contributing.
Mrs Duligall is experimenting with different ways of putting photos onto our class blog. This time she has used animoto. Teachers can get a free educators account.

The Shopping Basket

The other week we used The Shopping Basket by John Burningham as our shared reader. We enjoyed the story and made a map of Steven's journey as well as stick puppets of the characters. The story is one we like to read over and over again. John Burningham is a very clever author as he tells the story through pictures as well as through words.

Thank you Greta for letting us help you edit your writing. We read the writing out loud and listened for the breaks. Then we knew where the sentences were and Greta could put her full stops in.

Interpreting Graphs

This week for our maths starters we are interpreting graphs. This is a really fun activity to do.

Week 6 Newsletter

Term 1 Week 6
Monday 5th March
Dear Parents,

It was lovely to see so many of you last week. Firstly at the parent teacher interviews which I found very useful, and secondly at the school picnic which was very well attended and the weather turned out to be lovely.
Library – We missed out on our library time last week due to the interviews so children will have had their books for two weeks. Please remember to send them in and we will get new books for this week.
Mathletics Passwords are in homework books and homework will be set this week. Mathletics directs children to complete their homework before they can compete in Mathletics Live.
Chocolate Fundraising – Chocolates will continue to be issued to children this week. Sales are to take place over a five week period with Friday 30th March being the close off day. Boxes are selling for $30 with $10.50 from each box going directly to the school. It has been suggested that the profits from this year’s chocolate sales goes on supporting the new property development, possible on the landscaping of the new rooms.
Spelling City – I have put all the spelling lists from the back of the homework books onto a programme called Spelling City. This can be accessed through the class blog or by going to http://www.spellingcity.com/
Once there choose the tab ‘Find a List’ and type ‘Mrs Duligall’ onto the search box with ‘Teacher Name’ as the criteria. Click on my name in the search result below and you will get the Essential Spelling Lists 1 to 5. (The big lists are split into smaller parts.) Children can use this site to learn the spelling of the words, practise through ‘games’ and they can also test themselves. The programme reinforces words they already know as well as those they need to know.

I will be out of the classroom on Tuesday and Wednesday this week with CRT (Curriculum Release Time). I will still be in school. On Tuesday the Junior Team meet to plan our next unit of work. On Wednesday I will be around preparing resources and having some one-to-one time with children.

School Picnic

Last night was our school picnic. Lots of families came and had a picnic on the school field. The children had a big game of cricket.
